New Sky Lantern – Long Compton

Always wanted more light?

Sky Lantern

Bringing your design to life

Our client already had a corrugated sky lantern in their garden room but the room was too warm in summer and too cold in winter. They needed it to be just right.

When we carried out the site survey we found that the there was a basic flat roof that was not insulated. There was also extensive rot in the rafters which was due to leaks in many areas. The room had a lovely slate floor with underfloor heating already installed.

Discussion with the client led to a slight change in their brief, once they realised the breadth of the work that we were able to do for them. The plan was to include a new lighting scheme and a rewire of the room.

The challenge with this build was ensuring that the light was plentiful and that ventilation was available. The desire was that his space would be suitable for all year round use.

We sourced a bespoke sky lantern, which was right on the limits size wise with what is available, which enabled us to include an electric mechanism to open and close the ventilation panel which maximised the ease of use. Most lanterns are smaller and don’t offer this functionality.

The roof structure had to be built out from the main house to the outbuildings. This required lots of joists and complex joinery to ensure it was of a suitable strength to take the size of the new roof lantern.

The new flat roof was fully insulated and protected from the elements by rubber sheeting.

The result; a high quality project with real attention to detail. A room to now be enjoyed all year round.

A full rewire meant the client could introduce flexible mood lighting at very little additional cost.

Down with the old.
